A couple of nights ago, a bunch of friends and I went to see one of my favorite artists, Lights, live at the Varsity Theater where I live. Its actually a kind of funny story, because I have bought tickets to see her twice, and both of those times I haven't been able to attend the concert. This time, there was no way I wasn't going.
The opening act was a local artist named Pat Brown. When you think of opening acts, you always kind of expect them to be kind of crappy, but with good intentions. This guy, however, rocked! Even though his lyrics and hooks weren't that catchy, he was obviously really talented and hardworking. You can visit his website at patbrownmusic.com.
my friend kaylyn and i with pat. he was super nice! |
Lights has been on tour promoting the acoustic version of her album, Siberia. Since Siberia is such a dubstep and techno based album, hearing it with just a guitar and an cello is totally cool, especially adding Light's amazing vocals on top of it. If you've heard Light's music, you know that she is very electronic, so you'd expect her voice to be mediocre with all of the autotune added on top of it. In reality, Light's voice is even better live then it is on her albums. I swear, this girl can really sing!

What was amazing about this concert is that she let us really get to know her, in comparison to pop concerts where they just sing, make a couple jokes, and leave. Hearing her reasons for writing some of my favorite songs was an incredible experience, and even made me come to love some songs that before I thought was slightly insignificant. Before I saw her live, my favorite Lights songs were Flux and Flow and Siberia. Now, they are Suspension and Where the Fence is Low.
While I was there, I picked up the vinyl Siberia Acoustic album, and my sister got a t-shirt for us to share. Overall, it was awesome! I'm so glad I finally got to see her, and that I got to spend time with some of my best friends. Photo creds to Kaylyn (I forgot my camera, so she let me steal the pictures that she took with her iPhone.)
Stay groovy,
xo Camille
